Well no. Why can’t she be in her underwear and be sexy and beautiful and still smarter than you? See, that’s the thing. In the first movie we saw Kirk in his undies, and they cut the Benedict shower scene, but we all know it’ll be on the DVD’s, and we’ve all seen the gifs they leaked. So there’s male nudity. And we’ve seen the gif sets of interviewers asking the men about their training, and about their diets, and making them uncomfortable by talking about their looks. What we’re seeing here isn’t an issue with JJ, its the interviewer. Its men who feel entitled to say things like this to women, in movies and real life.

Carol was in her underwear because she was changing, and when Kirk turned to look at her, she called him out but kept her calm. When this man said this to her, she called him out and kept her calm. So what I saw was a strong, intelligent, beautiful woman dealing with this BS and handling it like a boss. She is aware that some men are like this and will just ride over you. You cannot phase her with you misogyny, because she is that much better than you.

The point I was making was not “hey, girls can’t be in their underwear because then no one will think they are smart.” Because fuck no, that’s bullshit all on its own and women should be able to dress and look like however the fuck they want and no matter what a woman looks like, she’s capable of whatever the fuck she wants to do.

Nor was I trying to imply that bullshit like what that reporter pulled would not happen had Carol Marcus NOT appeared in her underwear.

The point of my tags was to say, “This is why gratuitous objectification of women in movies doesn’t need to happen. This is why it’s different from when men are in their underwear.” Because no matter how Carol handles it in-canon (and yeah, she did handle it like a boss, she wasn’t putting up with Kirk’s crap), that doesn’t change that her underwear scene is happening in a vacuum. We the audience are seeing it and it adds to an overall hostile environment for women and girls. It objectifies us.

Carol being in her underwear was not a female power fantasy (or not played as one, rather). Kirk being in HIS underwear (with two *actual* sex kitten partners) is a MALE power fantasy. And as far as Khan’s shower scene, well… it got cut for the big screen, didn’t it? And yet somehow they found time to show us Carol Marcus in her underwear for NO REASON. It wasn’t to establish characterization. It was for the titillation of the male gaze, in-canon (for Kirk) and out (for the audience).

And the harm that these kinds of scenes DO is that it reinforces that it’s OKAY to ask women questions about their bodies, their sex life, and if they’re “too beautiful” to be super smart, because it reinforces that women are objects for the pleasure of men. Women’s usefulness is defined by their sexual attractiveness to men, and so therefor the only reason for her to be a science officer is if she were “ugly” and thereby had to find a new way to be useful.

So, yeah, it’s a JJ issue for reinforcing that kind of bullshit thinking by stripping 3 out of 5 female characters with speaking roles down to their underwear.
